Archivists need to know how information technology is applied to recordkeeping and to the management of records. The needs in the two areas complement each other. Learning in both areas should proceed from a solid understanding of archival theory and method in order to ensure the protection of the integrity of archives as evidence of decision and action. With this goal in mind, strategies and tactics to bring about greater understanding of information technology in archival science can be devised to meet needs in both preappointment and postappointment education.
